I have used Twitter for a couple of years now and have loved it! I love looking and discovering different teachers and authors so I can keep up with news and information going on in the world. I also extremely enjoy the 140 character limit. I know that a lot of people find this annoying to trim down their tweets, but I think it is great to keep it short and sweet. I do not feel stressed to include a lot of information in my tweets, but provide links or media to help me get my point across.
I do have to say, that I have become more of a sidelines person with Twitter in the past. I retweet and like a lot of things, but creating my own tweets has also been not as frequent. I would say that this would be my goal through this course. I want to be more present and interactive on Twitter. I am excited to see how it goes!
Our text compared Twitter with Edmodo. I have just begun to use Edmodo and think that I like Twitter better. I feel that it is easier to access everything in one place and there are no limits to what is on Twitter. I think that students would like Twitter more, too, since that it encompasses more of the world and I still believe that it can be safe. Using Twitter with students, would be a great learning experience to practice safety online and reading nonfiction with all of the news links out there.
Last week, I posted about a link with the hashtags for education and I believe that this is helpful in channeling what I want to focus on with Twitter. I have spent some time on this and trying to tailor my Tweet Deck to match what I want to focus on.

ReplyDeleteYour excitement is contagious! I am still new to Twitter though I have been a member for a few years. I have stayed manly quiet too and just go on and look, but I feel very overwhelmed with all of the information. I agree with you that if I can get Tweetdeck to be aligned with what I want to look at, then it would very beneficial to me. There are so many interesting Tweets on Twitter and it is a great way to get students involved and actively participating in social media and teaching them the best way to use social media. I agree using hashtags can help us focus but there are some times that there are so many hashtags, even those tend to overwhelm me! However, I am also with you, I need to learn to be more active and start tweeting - sometimes you just need to jump in!

I am amazed at the information that can be shared/learned in a mere 140 characters. When I first started using Twitter, way back in 2008, the URLs weren't automatically shortened. I had to use a shortener like tinyurl or bitly when sharing a link. I love the convenience now.
Becoming more interactive on Twitter is a good goal. I often hear from those just getting started with Twitter that they feel like they have nothing to share. If you are feeling like that, just know that everyone feels like that in the beginning. You have a wealth of knowledge, ideas, and resources that other educators would love to hear. Share!
Happy learning!
